CAPT. LARRY COHEN'S KEY WEST FISHING REPORT
NOVEMBER 2004
It is that time of the year where you need to be ready for any opportunity that may just happen to swim along. From day to day the conditions are starting to shift. For example on a bright sunny day with no wind Bonefish and Permit should be easy to spot tailing as there will be no or little chop on the water. And yes, on the calm early mornings I still have Tarpon rolling next to the houseboat.
And as usual the Barracudas and Sharks seem to be around in pretty good numbers, throwing live blue crabs to the smaller sharks, or a well placed plug to the others. (We had a 6 ft Hammerhead to the boat the other morning.)
On the other hand, if the wind is up and the chop is making it difficult to spot fish, we have been throwing smaller fly rods in the channels for Jacks, Blue runners, and Barracudas. Believe me, the big jacks will put you to the test and are a great fish this time of the year. And of course, you don't have to be an excellent caster. I am here to give you some pointers and help you out.
My wife has been playing around with the video camera and has put together some videos for you to check out. There is one video taken from our underwater houseboat cam when we were feeding tarpon. And if you want to know more about fly fishing, check out the video about the Double Haul and don't forget to turn your speakers on.
Just a quick reminder as it cools off up North and people start to make there reservations to come down to fish. My phone gets very busy. So I would suggest you don't wait until the last minute.
Thank you.
